Discussion Session between DOSM and Tenaga Nasional Berhad

Date: August 9, 2023 (Wednesday) Venue: Melur Meeting Room, Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) On August 9, 2023, a productive discussion session took place at the Melur Meeting Room, hosted by the Industrial Production & Construction Statistics Division of the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) and chaired by the Director of the Industrial Production & Construction Statistics Division. The session were attended by members from the Strategic, Communication, and International Division, Integration & Data Management Division, along with a dedicated team from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). The primary objective of this meeting was to fortify and enhance collaboration and strategic alignment between DOSM and Tenaga Nasional Berhad. Quarterly Construction Statistics, Second Quarter 2023

  The Construction sector continued to expand in the second quarter of 2023,  rising by 8.1 per cent to record RM32.4 billion  The value of work done in the Construction sector continued to increase for the fifth quarter with year-on-year growth of 8.1 per cent to record a total of RM32.4 billion in the second quarter of 2023 (Q1 2023: 9.4%).  The increment was supported continuously by double-digit growth in Civil engineering with 10.4 per cent in this quarter (Q1 2023: 17.2%). In the meantime, the sub-sector of Special trade activities recorded higher growth in this quarter by 9.8 per cent as compared to 9.0 per cent in the previous quarter while the Non-residential buildings sub-sector grew modestly by 5.7 per cent (Q1 2023: 9.6%).  Additionally, the work done value in the Residential buildings sub-sectors rebounded to 6.9 per cent from negative 2.2 per cent registered in the preceding quarter. Monthly Manufacturing Statistics, June 2023

  The sales value of the Manufacturing sector registering a decline of  4.0 per cent to record RM147.4 billion in June 2023  The sales value of the Manufacturing sector slipped by 4.0 per cent in June 2023 after recording a positive growth of 3.3 per cent in the preceding month. The decline was primarily influenced by the Food, beverages & tobacco sub-sector, which decreased by 14.6 per cent, marking three consecutive months of double-digit declines. In addition, the deterioration was also attributable to the contraction in the Petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic (-12.4%); and Wood, furniture, paper products & printing (-1.1%) sub-sectors. Industrial Production Index, June 2023

  Malaysia's Industrial Production Index fell 2.2 per cent in June 2023 attributed to contraction in the Manufacturing and Mining sectors In June 2023, the IPI returned to record a contraction, declining by 2.2 per cent year-on-year contrasting a positive growth 4.8 per cent registered in May 2023. The decline in June 2023 was attributed to contraction in the Manufacturing and Mining sectors, with negative 1.6 per cent (May 2023: 5.1%) and negative 6.4 per cent (May 2023: 2.9%), respectively. Meanwhile, the output of the Electricity sector moderated to 2.8 per cent as against 5.9 per cent recorded in the preceding month. On a month-on-month comparison, the IPI grew by 2.2 per cent as compared to 7.3 per cent registered in the previous month.   The sales value of the Manufacturing sector returned to positive growth of 3.3 per cent, reaching RM146.8 billion in May 2023  The sales value of the Manufacturing sector increased by 3.3 per cent in May 2023 after recording a decline of 2.0 per cent in the preceding month. The expansion was bolstered by the strong growth of 17.3 per cent registered in Transport equipment & other manufactures coupled with the continuously increasing trend in Non-metallic mineral products, basic metal & fabricated metal products (8.7%); and Electrical & electronics products (8.2%). On month-on-month comparison, the sales value rebounded to 1.3 per cent as against a negative 7.2 per cent recorded in April 2023.   Malaysia's Industrial Production Index rebounded to 4.7 per cent in May 2023, induced by positive momentum in all sectors The IPI returned to positive growth of 4.7 per cent in May 2023 as against negative 3.3 per cent recorded in the previous month. The expansion in May 2023 was attributed by the increase in all sectors,  predominantly by Manufacturing sector which registered 5.1 per cent (April 2023: 3.0%), Mining with 2.9 per cent (April 2023: -4.9%); and Electricity with 5.0 per cent (April 2023: -2.0%). As compared to April 2023, the IPI accelerated by 7.3 per cent after registering a negative growth of 10.8 per cent in April 2023.
