Malaysia’s construction sector recovered 1.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2019

The value of construction work done in the fourth quarter 2019 recovered by 1.3 per cent (Q3 2019: -0.6%) year-on-year basis, amounting to RM37.0 billion  (Q3 2019: RM36.1 billion).


The Civil engineering sub-sector soared higher at 7.9 per cent in the fourth quarter 2019, followed by the Special trades activities sub-sector 3.8 per cent. Residential buildings sub-sector rose by 2.7 per cent after contracting since first quarter 2018. Meanwhile, the Non-residential buildings sub-sector declined by 10.3 per cent.


The Civil engineering sub-sector remained dominant as the main contributor to the value of construction work done with 45.4 per cent share. Non-residential buildings contributed 25.1 per cent, Residential buildings (24.5%) and Special trades activities (4.9%).


The private sector continued to propel the construction activity with 56.1 per cent share  of value of construction work done (RM20.7 billion) as compared to the public sector with 43.9 per cent share of value of construction work done (RM16.3 billion).


The value of construction work done for 2019 amounted to RM146.4 billion, grew by 0.6 per cent as compared to RM145.5 billion in the previous year.
