Index Of Industrial Production Monthly Manufacturing Statistics Malaysia, February 2020
The Industrial Production Index (IPI) grew 5.8 per cent in February 2020 as compared with the same month of the previous year. The growth in February 2020 was driven by the increase of indices in all sectors, index of Electricity (6.8%), index of Mining (6.1%) and index of Manufacturing (5.6%). On year-on-year basis, the Manufacturing sector output rose by 5.6 per cent in February 2020 after recording a growth of 2.2 per cent in January 2020. The major sub-sectors contributing to the increase in February 2020 were Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber and Plastic Products (6.3%), Non-metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal and Fabricated Metal Products (6.2%) and Electrical and Electronics Products (5.1%). The Mining sector output rose 6.1 per cent in February 2020 as compared to the same period of the previous year. The positive growth was due to the increase in Natural Gas index (12.0%). Meanwhile Crude Oil and Condensate index decreased by 0.5 per cent. The Electricity sector output increased 6.8 per cent in February 2020 as compared to the same month of the previous year. Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales grew by 7.0 per cent to RM110.6 billion in February 2020 Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales grew by 7.0 per cent in February 2020 to register at RM110.6 billion as compared to RM103.4 billion reported a year ago. The year-on-year growth was driven by the increase in Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber and Plastic Products (9.4%), Food, Beverages & Tobacco Products (7.2%) and Electrical & Electronics Products (5.5%). Total employees engaged in the Manufacturing sector in February 2020 was 2,277,882 persons, an increase of 1.6 per cent or 36,080 persons as compared to 2,241,802 persons in February 2019. Salaries & wages paid amounted to RM7,608.4 million, went up 4.4 per cent or RM318.1 million in February 2020 as against the same month of the preceding year. The sales value per employee grew by 5.3 per cent to record RM48,553 as compared with the same month in 2019. Meanwhile, the average salaries & wages per employee was RM3,340 in February 2020. |

under the column: Latest Releases. - After conducting the Economic Census 2016 (reference year 2015), Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has reviewed and carried out the benchmarking process towards the manufacturing statistics collected from the Monthly Manufacturing Survey. The benchmarking process is done to enable the series of values of annual estimates derived from short term survey consistent and match with the annual value from census/annual survey of the benchmark year. The benchmarking statistics is compiled on sales value, number of employees and salaries & wages and being published starting from January 2020. The benchmark process adapted the guideline of the Quarterly National Accounts Manual 2017 edition, International Monetary Fund to meet the objectives as follows:
- to estimate monthly data that are temporally consistent with the annual data: that is, to ensure that the sum of the monthly data is equal to the annual benchmark;
- to preserve as much as possible the monthly movements in the indicator under the restrictions provided by the annual data; and
- to ensure, for forward series, that the sum of the monthly of the current year is as close as possible to the unknown future annual data.
