Index Of Industrial Production and Monthly Manufacturing Statistics Malaysia, April 2020
The Industrial Production Index (IPI) dropped 32.0 per cent in April 2020 as compared with the same month of the previous year due to the effect of Movement Control Order execution to prevent COVID-19 outbreaks. Deterioration of IPI in April 2020 was due to the significant declined in all indices; index of Manufacturing (-37.2%), index of Mining (-19.6%) and index of Electricity (-19.2%).
The Manufacturing sector output in April 2020 contracted 37.2 per cent on year-on-year basis after recording 4.1 per cent decline in March 2020. The main sub-sectors contributing to the decrease in Manufacturing sector in April 2020 were Non-metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal and Fabricated Metal Products (-62.7%), Electrical and Electronics Products (-34.1%) and Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber and Plastic Products (-21.4%).
The Mining sector output dropped 19.6 per cent in April 2020 as compared to the same period of the previous year. The deterioration was due to the decrease in Crude Oil and Condensate index (-20.2%) and Natural Gas index (-19.0%).
The Electricity sector output decreased 19.2 per cent in April 2020 as compared to the same month of the previous year.
Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales in April 2020 stood at RM75.8 billion, plunged 33.0 per cent as compared to RM113.1 billion reported a year ago. The year-on-year decline in sales value in April 2020 was due to the decrease in Transport Equipment & Other Manufactures Products (-69.5%), Non-Metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal & Fabricated Metal Products (-67.5%) and Electrical & Electronics Products (-39.6%).
Total employees engaged in the Manufacturing sector in April 2020 was 2,169,473 persons, a decrease of 3.2 per cent as compared to 2,240,470 persons in April 2019. Salaries & wages paid amounted to RM6,825.4 million, decreased by 6.2 per cent or RM448.7 million in April 2020 as against the same month of the preceding year.
The sales value per employee declined by 30.8 per cent to record RM34,918 as compared with the same month in 2019. Meanwhile, the average salaries & wages per employee was RM3,146 in April 2020.
