Index Of Industrial Production and Monthly Manufacturing Statistics Malaysia, June 2020

The Industrial Production Index (IPI) surged 26.2 per cent in June 2020 as compared with the previous month since the government allowed more industries to resume operations from May 2020 onwards. Based on month-on-month comparison, the increment of IPI in June 2020 was due to the increase in all indices; index of Manufacturing (36.8%), index of Mining (2.4%) and index of Electricity (0.2%).
However, on year-on-year basis, the IPI decreased 0.4 per cent in June 2020 as compared with the same month of the previous year. The decline in IPI in June 2020 was due to the decrease in the index of Mining (-17.1%) and Electricity (-2.4%). Meanwhile, the Manufacturing index recorded an increase of 4.7 per cent.
The Manufacturing sector output increased by 4.7 per cent in June 2020 after recording a decrease of 22.6 per cent in May 2020. The major sub-sectors contributing to the growth in Manufacturing sector in June 2020 were Electrical and Electronics Products (13.2%), Food, Beverages and Tobacco (10.5%) and Transport Equipment and Other Manufacturers (10.7%).
The Mining sector output dropped 17.1 per cent in June 2020 as compared to the same period of the previous year. The negative growth was due to the decrease in Natural Gas index (-13.5%) and Crude Oil and Condensate index (-21.1%).
The Electricity sector output decreased 2.4 per cent in June 2020 as compared to the same month of the previous year.
The IPI for the second quarter 2020 recorded a significant decline of 17.9 per cent as compared to the same period of the previous year. This decrease was due to the deterioration in all indices; Mining index (-19.6%), Manufacturing index (-18.1%) and Electricity index (-10.8%).
Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales in June 2020 stood at RM116.7 billion, expanded to 30.4 per cent as compared to previous month. On year-on-year basis, the sales value rebounded to 4.1 per cent after registering negative growth for three consecutive months. The sub-sectors that grew at a faster pace month-on-month were Transport Equipment & Other Manufactures Products (87.4%), Electrical & Electronics Products (45.7%) and Non-Metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal & Fabricated Metal Products (26.3%).
Meanwhile, the year-on-year rebound in sales value in June 2020 was driven by the increase in Food, Beverages & Tobacco Products (25.3%), Transport Equipment & Other Manufactures Products (23.1%) and Electrical & Electronics Products (12.7%).
Total employees engaged in the Manufacturing sector in June 2020 was 2,188,142 persons, a decrease of 2.2 per cent as compared to 2,238,195 persons in June 2019. Salaries & wages paid amounted to RM7,113.1 million, decreased by 2.0 per cent or RM146.8 million in June 2020 as against the same month of the preceding year.
The sales value per employee rose by 6.5 per cent to record RM53,319 as compared with the same month in 2019. Meanwhile, the average salaries & wages per employee was RM3,251 in June 2020.
In the second quarter 2020, sales value of the Manufacturing sector shrank 16.5 per cent to RM281.9 billion as compared to 2.2 per cent registered in the previous quarter. The decline was due to the decrease in Non-Metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal & Fabricated Metal Products (-48.8%), Transport Equipment & Other Manufactures Products (-24.3%) and Electrical & Electronics Products (-15.6%). The number of employees and salaries & wages dropped 2.2 per cent and 4.0 per cent respectively in the second quarter 2020.
