Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) returned to positive growth of 1.2 per cent in July 2020

The Industrial Production Index (IPI) returned to positive growth of 1.2 per cent in July 2020 since February 2020 as compared to the same month of the previous year. The increase of IPI in July 2020 was due to the increment of 2.9 per cent in Manufacturing index. Meanwhile, the index of Mining and Electricity recorded a deterioration of 3.0 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively. 


The Manufacturing sector output based on year-on-year comparison increased by 2.9 per cent in July 2020 after recording an increase of 4.7 per cent in June 2020. The major sub-sectors contributing to the growth in Manufacturing sector in July 2020 were Electrical and Electronics Products (9.6%), Transport Equipment and Other Manufacturers (9.0%) and Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber and Plastic Products (1.5%).


The Mining sector output dropped 3.0 per cent in July 2020 as compared to the same period of the previous year. The deterioration was due to the decrease in Crude Oil and Condensate index (-1.2%) and Natural Gas index (-4.4%).


The Electricity sector output decreased 5.1 per cent in July 2020 as compared to the same month of the previous year.



Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales recorded a growth of 1.9 per cent in July 2020

Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales in July 2020 stood at RM119.3 billion, grew 1.9 per cent as compared to previous year. The rise in sales value in July 2020 was driven by the increase in Food, Beverages & Tobacco Products (24.9%), Transport Equipment & Other Manufactures Products (14.3%) and Electrical & Electronics Products (8.4%).


Meanwhile, on month-on-month basis, the sales value increased 2.1 per cent, driven by Transport Equipment & Other Manufactures Products (11.8%), Non-Metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal & Fabricated Metal Products (8.0%) and Electrical & Electronics Products (3.9%).


Total employees engaged in the Manufacturing sector in July 2020 was 2,192,260 persons, a decrease of 2.4 per cent as compared to 2,246,595 persons in July 2019. Salaries & wages paid amounted to RM7,090.9 million, dropped by 3.2 per cent or RM236.7 million in July 2020 as against the same month of the preceding year.


The sales value per employee rose by 4.5 per cent to record RM54,403 as compared with the same month in 2019. Meanwhile, the average salaries & wages per employee was RM3,235 in July 2020.
