Industrial Production Index and Monthly Manufacturing Statistics, March 2022 were published on May 10, 2022.


Malaysia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) grew 5.1 per cent in March 2022, steered by Manufacturing sector with a growth of 6.9 per cent


The Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased 5.1 per cent in March 2022 as compared to the same month of the previous year. The expansion of IPI was contributed by the increment in all three sectors; Manufacturing index, 6.9 per cent, Electricity index, 0.8 per cent and Mining index, 0.3 per cent


The Manufacturing sector output based on year-on-year comparison increased by 6.9 per cent in March 2022 after recording a growth of 5.2 per cent in February 2022. The main subsectors contributed to the growth in Manufacturing sector in March 2022 were Electrical & Electronics Products (18.6%), Non-metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal & Fabricated Metal Products (5.6%) and Food, Beverages & Tobacco Products (4.1%). Simultaneously, export-oriented and domestic-oriented industries recorded a growth of 7.8 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively.


The Mining sector output grew 0.3 per cent in March 2022 as compared to the same period of the previous year. The increase was driven by the positive growth of 5.7 per cent in Natural Gas index. Meanwhile, Crude Oil & Condensate index deteriorated 6.8 per cent. The Electricity sector output rose 0.8 per cent in March 2022 as compared to the same month of the previous year.


The IPI for the first quarter 2022 grew 4.5 per cent as compared to the same period of the previous year. The increase was attributed by the growth in Manufacturing index (6.3%) and Electricity index (3.7%). Meanwhile, Mining index contracted 1.8 per cent.




Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales in March 2022 recorded the highest value of RM144.6 billion with a growth of 13.9 per cent

Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales value in March 2022 stood at RM144.6 billion, grew 13.9 per cent as compared to the previous year. The rise in sales value in March 2022 was driven by the increase in Food, Beverages & Tobacco Products (16.4%), Petroleum Chemical, Rubber & Plastic Products (12.6%) and Electrical & Electronics Products (9.8%). Meanwhile, on month-on-month basis, the sales value increased 9.8 per cent.


Total employees engaged in the Manufacturing sector in March 2022 was 2,287,325 persons, an increase of 2.4 per cent as compared to 2,233,545 persons in March 2021. Salaries & wages paid amounted to RM7,842.9 million, increased by 4.4 per cent or RM328.6 million in March 2022 as against the same month of the preceding year.


The sales value per employee rose by 11.2 per cent to record RM63,222 as compared with the same month in 2021. Meanwhile, the average salaries & wages per employee was RM3,429 in March 2022.


In the first quarter 2022, the sales value of the Manufacturing sector grew 12.8 per cent to RM415.3 billion as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The increase was contributed by Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber & Plastics Products (25.2%), Electrical & Electronics Products (17.7%) and Food, Beverages & Tobacco Products (17.0%). The number of employees and salaries & wages rose 2.4 per cent and 4.1 per cent respectively in the first quarter 2022.
